Compare gas boiler repair quotes with one enquiry
Tell us your postcode and what happens when you try to use the heating or hot water. One enquiry can reach up to four independent local heating engineers for pressure, ignition, PCB, pump, diverter valve or thermostat and sensor repairs. You can fill in the form before the fault has been diagnosed.
There is no fee for the matching. How many engineers reply depends on the fault and who is free, so you may hear from fewer than four. You decide whether to book anyone. Check the diagnostic and attendance charges with the engineer before booking; the free enquiry does not cover those fees.
After you send the form
- Describe the fault. Add your postcode, the boiler make if you know it, any fault code on the display and what you have already tried.
- Talk it through. Engineers may ask for photos of the boiler, the gauge or the display, or arrange a visit.
- Compare the quotes. Check the part, the labour, the call-out fee, the guarantee and VAT on each one.
- Choose, or don’t. Any booking, written price and scope are settled between you and that business.
Guide UK boiler repair prices
Each row below is our budgeting guide for a typical repair of that type. The ranges allow for ordinary parts and labour and are not fixed quotes. Check VAT and any call-out fee with the engineer. Where a repair needs a part that has to be ordered, expect a second visit to be part of the price or charged separately, depending on the business.
| Repair | Guide range | What moves the price |
|---|---|---|
| Boiler Pressure Problems and Repairs | £90–£350 | Whether the cause is a recharge or a hidden leak |
| Boiler Ignition and Pilot Light Repairs | £120–£400 | Electrode and probe, or a gas valve or ignition board |
| Boiler PCB and Electrical Fault Repairs | £150–£500 | A fuse or connector, or a main board for your make |
| Boiler Pump Replacement and Repairs | £180–£450 | Pump head or whole pump, and isolation valves |
| Boiler Diverter Valve Repairs | £180–£450 | Motor, cartridge or whole valve body |
| Boiler Thermostat and Sensor Repairs | £80–£300 | Battery and room unit, or a boiler sensor or overheat thermostat |
| Gas valve replacement on a straightforward job | £180–£220 | Valve model, access and safety testing; some models cost substantially more |
| Boiler service, if booked separately from the repair | £80–£120 | Boiler type, location and what the service includes; repair parts are extra |
For comparison, see Checkatrade’s published guide to boiler repair costs. The six service ranges above are starting budgets; repairs with scarce or expensive parts can exceed them. The gas-valve and service rows are related jobs, not charges to add automatically to every repair. Check whether VAT is included in your individual quote.
Property size matters most when the work involves draining, flushing or tracing pipework across several rooms. Boiler model, number of faults, access, local labour rates and out-of-hours attendance can matter more than floor area for a single component change.
When a repair costs more than the guide
A main circuit board for some premium makes can take an electrical repair past £500. A gas valve or a combi’s complete hydraulic block can take an ignition or diverter job past £400. A leak that has to be chased out of a screed floor adds the cost of making good to the heating engineer’s fee.
Age and access matter too. A boiler in a loft, a part that has been discontinued, weekend or evening attendance and a heavily sludged system all push the quote up. For a substantial repair, ask how the boiler’s condition and parts availability affect the case for repair or replacement.
Useful details for each fault
- Pressure problems: the gauge reading cold and hot, how often you top up, and whether the discharge pipe outside drips.
- Ignition and pilot light: whether it clicks, whether a flame appears even briefly, and any fault code.
- PCB and electrical faults: whether the display is blank, whether the spur is on, and whether a fuse has blown.
- Pump faults: whether the boiler is hot while the radiators are cold, and whether the pump is noisy or silent.
- Diverter valve faults: what the radiators and hot taps do when each is called for, and any drips under the boiler.
- Thermostat and sensor faults: the temperature you set, what the house reaches, and whether the thermostat is wired or wireless.
Agree what the quote covers
Ask which part is being replaced by make and model, and whether the diagnosis is priced separately. Confirm whether draining, refilling, inhibitor and bleeding are included for any repair that opens the heating circuit.
Set a spending limit for the agreed repair and ask the engineer to contact you before charging for any additional fault they find. Read the guarantee terms, and ask whether a repair by an independent engineer affects any manufacturer warranty still running on the boiler.
Check the engineer is qualified
Companies joining the network are asked for relevant insurance details and references. Check their current cover and experience before booking.
Use an engineer on the Gas Safe Register with the right appliance and fuel categories for gas work. Ask to see the attending engineer’s photo ID and check their qualifications. Do not remove the boiler casing yourself. An external pump or room control may need a competent heating or electrical specialist without involving gas work; the qualifications needed depend on what is being disturbed.
The engineer’s business provides the repair under its own contract, and you pay that business directly. We cannot send anyone in an emergency. If you smell gas in Great Britain, call 0800 111 999. In Northern Ireland call 0800 002 001; for LPG contact your supplier.
Frequently asked questions
Will I get exactly four quotes?
No. Your enquiry can be matched with up to four heating engineers, but replies depend on the fault, the postcode and who is available. You do not have to accept any quote.
Do engineers charge to visit?
Some do. Submitting the enquiry is free. Attendance and fault-finding may carry an engineer’s fee. Confirm that fee before booking and whether it is credited against a subsequent repair.
Should I repair my boiler or replace it?
Request a repair quotation together with an assessment of the boiler’s condition and age. Where parts are scarce and the repair approaches the cost of a new boiler, obtain a replacement quotation as well.
What paperwork should I keep?
Keep the written quote, the invoice and a note of which part was replaced and when. If the repair is under a manufacturer’s warranty or a boiler cover plan, send them the invoice as well.
